Retired Permits
What is the monthly income required to be proven for a retired permit in South Africa?
With the favourable exchange rate South Africa offers, many foreigners wishing to immigrate to South Africa are able to prove the necessary prescribed monthly income that is required by the Department in order to obtain a retired permit to reside in South Africa.
In order to obtain a temporary residence retired permit, the applicant(s) must prove ZAR 20,000 per month, per person for a maximum period of 48 months. Therefore, if a couple would like to apply for a temporary residence retired permit to reside in South Africa – proof of ZAR 40,000 per month is necessary to be verified with supporting documentation.
In the event that the applicant is wishing to apply for South African permanent residence based on the retired category, the financial requirement for this application is proving ZAR 20,000 per month, life-long guaranteed income. Therefore, if a couple or family (if married or in permanent relationship for 5 years or longer) is applying for permanent residence based on retired category, one of the applicants must be able to prove the whole amount. Joint income to make up the required monthly amount is not accepted by the Department.
If a couple (who has not been married or in a permanent relationship for 5 years or longer) would like to apply for South African permanent residency based on the retired category, the financial requirement for this application is proving ZAR 20,000 per month, per person, life-long guaranteed income.
