When can a person apply for South African citizenship?

A person with a South African permanent residence visa qualifies to apply for South African citizenship through naturalization after residing in South Africa for five or more years while being a permanent resident.

Any person married to a South African citizen qualifies for naturalization two years after receiving his or her South African permanent residence visa issued at the time of the marriage.

A person under 21 years old, who has obtained South African permanent residence qualifies for naturalization immediately after the visa has been issued.
